Trusting your gut is a phrase we hear often, usually in the context of making big life decisions or avoiding danger. But for many of us, that “inner voice” can feel less like a clear compass and more like a tangled web of anxiety, past conditioning, and second-guessing.
If you’ve ever found yourself paralyzed by a choice—wondering if you’re hearing your intuition or just your fear—you aren’t alone. The good news is that intuition isn’t a magical gift reserved for a lucky few. It is a biological and psychological skill. And just like a muscle, it can be trained.
As women, we are often taught to prioritize logic, external validation, and the needs of others above our own internal signals. Over time, this mutes our “inner GPS.” Learning to trust your gut is actually a journey of unlearning—reclaiming the wisdom that has been there all along.
From a neurological perspective, your “gut feeling” is actually your brain processing information at lightning speed. Your brain constantly scans your environment, comparing current experiences to a lifetime of patterns, memories, and subtle cues.
When your brain finds a match or a discrepancy, it sends a signal to your nervous system. This is why intuition often feels physical – a tightening in the chest, a “sinking” feeling in the stomach, or a sudden sense of expansive peace. This is your enteric nervous system (often called the “second brain”) communicating with your mind.
Before we can train our intuition, we have to understand why we lost touch with it. Common “noise” that drowns out the gut includes:
This is the most common hurdle. Fear is usually loud, frantic, and demanding. It often speaks in “what-ifs” and focuses on catastrophic outcomes. Intuition, however, is typically quiet and neutral. It feels like a “knowing” rather than a “worrying.”
You don’t have to start by trusting your gut on a career change. Start small.
Your body is the primary messenger of your intuition. To hear it, you must be “in” it. Many of us live entirely in our heads, disconnected from the neck down.
Intuition rarely shouts. It whispers in the gaps between thoughts. If your life is constantly filled with podcasts, social media, and “doing,” there is no room for the whisper to be heard.
One of the best ways to build self-trust is to track your hits. Write down times you followed your gut and it worked out. Also, write down times you ignored your gut and what happened next. Seeing the patterns on paper helps bridge the gap between your logical mind and your intuitive soul.
Training yourself to trust your gut isn’t about being “right” 100% of the time. It’s about building a relationship with yourself where you feel safe, heard, and led by your own truth.
When you lead yourself from a place of inner wisdom, the world starts to look different. Decisions become less draining. Boundaries become easier to set. You stop seeking permission from the outside and start finding it on the inside.
If you feel like you’ve lost your way or your “inner voice” has gone silent, remember that it hasn’t left you. It’s just waiting for you to listen.
I help women reconnect with their authentic selves, heal the parts that feel “stuck,” and discover their unlimited edge. Whether you are navigating a major transition or simply want to feel more grounded in your own skin, the journey always begins within.
